MOJAVE, EASTERN KERN COUNTY — October 22, 2026. Drivers planning to use State Route 58 near the Randsburg Cutoff interchange at the end of October should allow extra time: a new Caltrans District 9 schedule lists guardrail work on Friday, October 30, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where the work is planned
The advisory identifies eastbound SR-58 from Randsburg Cutoff Road at Exit 165 to approximately one mile west. Road crews plan to close the outside lane and shoulder while repairing guardrail. Caltrans describes possible brief delays, not a complete highway shutdown.
Why the location matters to Mojave-area motorists
This highway segment is part of the route between Mojave and the desert communities farther east. Local and through travelers should distinguish the affected eastbound lane from the opposite carriageway; the agency has not announced a full closure or a prescribed detour in this notice.
Drivers using the Randsburg Cutoff interchange, trucks passing along SR-58 and travelers connecting with other eastern Kern routes may see slower traffic near the active work zone. The exact timing can change because of weather, conditions and equipment.
Do not confuse this with other SR-58 projects
The same October 22 Caltrans advisory also lists westbound guardrail work near Broome Road on Wednesday and Thursday, and bridge maintenance near Cameron Canyon Road on Tuesday through Friday. Those are separate locations, directions and work types; one alert should not be treated as a closure of the entire corridor.
The best approach is to check posted signs and the live state route map before traveling rather than rely on a schedule published several days earlier.
Official source and conditions
This report is based on the Caltrans District 9 weekly traffic advisory published October 22, 2026, for work planned October 26–30. A listed construction schedule is not proof that a road is presently closed. Caltrans warns work may change because of weather, incidents or equipment. For travel immediately before departure, consult Caltrans QuickMap and posted work-zone signs. Motorists should slow down and move over for crews where safe.
